Tucson Earth Day Festival is The Start of Our New Education Series

by Melissa Diane Smith, author of Going Against GMOs

Starting on Earth Day (April 22) and running into May, our cohesive group of citizens who oppose Monsanto in Pima County – now known as the Toxin-Free Pima County Coalition, a chapter of GMO Free Arizona – will hold a series of educational events in Tucson and Marana.

The first event will be a GMO Free Arizona and Food Conspiracy Co-op booth at the Tucson Earth Day Festival, a community celebration of the environment with over 50 exhibitors providing fun, food, music, and hands-on learning and information for people of all ages. The festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the Children’s Museum at Armory Park, 200 S. 6th Avenue, in Tucson. Though I have a scheduling conflict that day and won’t be at the booth, you’ll find a lot of information there by me, including a “Find the GM Foods” Word Game and Test Your GMO Knowledge Quiz as well as an article I wrote on how to talk to your kids about GMOs. There will also be a handout on how to take action against Monsanto, organic food samples, and much more. To learn more, visit the Facebook event page.

One week later, on Saturday, April 29, at 2 p.m., I will be presenting “The Future of Pima County’s Food and Environment” at the Wheeler Taft Abbett Sr. Library, 7800 N. Schisler Drive (just west of I-10) in Marana, so be sure to mark your calendar! More details about this event and about other events our group will present in May will be coming soon, so stay tuned.

It’s hard to believe that just two months ago, we got the news that we were able to get the tax incentive for Monsanto in Pima County off the table. As soon as we hear that Monsanto has applied to the U.S. Commerce Department for Foreign Trade Zone status, we will work to block that. But the time is right to continue to educate more people about why genetically modified foods, pesticides, and Monsanto are such serious dangers to our environment, and there’s no better to time to start this new campaign than Earth Day!
