Encouraging Victories Against GMOs You May Not Have Heard About

by Melissa Diane Smith

There have been some disappointing developments against the people’s movement that is opposing GMOs (genetically modified organisms found in foods such as corn and soy). Mainstream media tends to cover that news, but there’s rarely-covered positive news to report. More people are waking up and banding together, and good things in the battle for protecting our food supply that you probably don’t know about have been happening recently. The following are victories and positive, hopeful developments that just might indicate a tipping point of rejection against GMOs in our food supply.

  • Ireland recently became a “GM-Free Zone” by banning the cultivation of GM crops, joining Japan and Egypt who have similar policies. Six countries – France, Germany, Austria, Greece, Hungary, and Luxemburg – have placed bans on the main commercial crop, MON 810, a type of GM corn produced by Monsanto. Peru’s congress recently banned GM foods for ten years. And in Sweden, Swedish livestock producers or food manufacturers will not be importing GM grain for animal feed, so all food in Sweden, including meat, will soon be non-GM!
  • More than 40 countries, including Australia, Britain, Italy, Japan, and Russia, require GMO labeling of foods. The United States does not require labeling, but more than a dozen U.S. states now have proposals and are considering laws that would require foods that contain GMOs to be labeled. (See map showing the states.)
  • The Maine legislature recently passed a Joint Resolution on state food sovereignty stating that it opposes “any federal statute, law or regulation that attempts to threaten our basic human right to save seed and grow, process, consume and exchange foods and farm products within the State of Maine.”
  • On June 16, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a law that would ban the Food and Drug Administration from approving genetically modified (GM) salmon. Alaskan Republican Don Young is credited with this effort to halt GM salmon. He amended a farm spending bill and included language that prevents the FDA from spending money on approving GM salmon.

Mike Adams explains the significance of this last development in his Natural News article, “In Partial Victory against GMOs, U.S. Congress Bans FDA from Approving GM Salmon”:

This effort to deny the FDA the ability to approve GM salmon isn’t a law yet. It’s only been passed by the House. Now the Senate needs to approve a similar amendment before if can become law. So the battle continues in the Senate…

If this effort succeeds, it will be the first time the U.S. Congress has really stood up against the FDA to fight for real food safety in the United States of America. And it may signify the beginning of a huge public backlash against GMOs that will ultimately end in GMOs being outlawed in the USA.

As we near another Independence Day, there is no better time to let you know of these developments indicating that the climate that allowed GMOs into our food supply without labeling is clearly changing, and we just have to keep up the pressure by buying non-GMO foods and spreading the word. Being a non-GMO consumer and activist is one of the most patriotic things you can do to protect this country and the planet.
