GM Corn & Roundup Lead to Tumors
and Organ Damage, New Study Finds

by Melissa Diane Smith

If you haven’t paid much attention to genetically modified foods so far, perhaps the horrifying results of the first long-term animal study on GMOs will get you to take notice and opt out of the feeding experiment we all unknowingly have been in.

A lifetime diet containing Roundup-tolerant genetically modified (GM) corn, or Roundup weedkiller at levels currently considered safe, can cause tumors and multiple organ damage and lead to premature death in laboratory rats, according to research published online in September in the scientific journal Food and Chemical Toxicology.

The study was the first animal trial examining the long-term effects of exposure to Roundup-tolerant GM corn and the complete herbicide formulation Roundup rather than just the active ingredient. The study lasted two years, the average lifespan of the type of rats used in the study, and much longer than the typical 90-day trials used in other GM studies.

In the study, the rats were fed NK603, a Monsanto-patented variety of GM corn that’s grown across North America and widely fed to animals and humans. The rats were either fed the NK603 corn alone, corn treated with agricultural levels of Roundup, or were given water treated with Roundup at low levels commonly found in contaminated drinking water and used in agriculture in the United States. The research linked varying levels of both Roundup and the NK603 corn to mammary (breast) tumors in female rats and severe liver and kidney damage in male rats. As a result of the massive breast tumors and liver and kidney damage in the rats fed NK603 corn, up to 50 percent of the male rats and 70 percent of the female rats died prematurely, compared with only 30 percent and 20 percent in the control group.

Gilles-Eric Séralini, Ph.D., a professor of molecular biology at the University of Caen who led the research team, said that the rats’ diet reflected the kind of exposure to genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and to Roundup that humans who eat genetically engineered food should expect.

Melissa’s comments:

Whether you know it or not, if you’re eating the typical American diet, you’re eating GM corn sprayed with Roundup.

This is the first long-term animal study done on GM corn and the Roundup herbicide that almost always goes together with GM corn, and it revealed multiple organ damage and/or massive, disfiguring breast tumors that led to early death. Do you think it’s likely that long-term exposure to GM corn and Roundup would have such horrendous effects on rat health and not do anything harmful to us? Of course not!

To protect your health and your family’s health, it’s time to say enough is enough, and to opt out of this ill-conceived, corporate-driven feeding experiment and unequivocally say no to GMOs.
