Get Entertained and Enlightened at Special Non-GMO Event on April 12th

by Melissa Diane Smith, author of Going Against GMOs

April 12th Loft event memeIs there a way to learn about the serious issues surrounding genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in our food and what you can do about them in an entertaining, community-oriented way? You bet. On the evening of Tuesday, April 12th, just head to the Loft Cinema in Tucson for the Non-GMO Information & Food Fair, the premiere screening in Tucson of Consumed, the first fictional (yet fact-oriented) film about GMOs, and an interactive Q&A and discussion following the movie.

At the fair, which starts at 6 p.m., get non-GMO samples and information, and bring enough cash to buy non-GMO skin care products and snacks and desserts and get a personally autographed copy of Going Against GMOs, the definitive consumer’s guide on the topic, at a special discount. Do some farmer’s market shopping: Purchase pesticide-free, non-GMO vegetables and homemade sauerkraut and kimchi (make sure to bring a cooler so you can keep the produce fresh in your car during the movie), and buy yourself and your family a non-GMO dinner or snack from one of the food trucks or vendor tables before the film.

The screening of Consumed starts at 7:30 p.m. The movie is not a documentary. It’s the first narrative feature film about the topic told in deeply personal ways. The story is anchored by a working-class, single mother played by Zoe Lister-Jones who goes on a journey to uncover the cause of her son’s mysterious illness and allergies. Interwoven are the stories of an organic farmer (played by Danny Glover) in danger of losing his farm, the CEO of a biotechnology corporation, two scientists on the verge of a major discovery, and an ex-cop caught in the middle of it all. The movie also addresses the idea that the more we learn about GMOs, the more many of us feel consumed by what we don’t know about them and the fear and hopelessness about our present food situation. To see a trailer, visit Consumedthemovie.com. Admission to the movie is $9.50, but discounts are available for military, students, seniors, and Loft members. See the Loft’s listing of the event here.

I, Melissa Diane Smith, will introduce the movie and I’ll also participate in a Q&A session and discussion with small farmer Anne Loftfield of High Energy Agriculture following the movie. We’ll cover the challenges involved with GMOs for individuals, businesses, scientists, and farmers, and the many ways each of us can take action against GMOs to positively change our food system.

This event is co-presented by myself, the Food Conspiracy Co-Op, and High Energy Agriculture in cooperation with GMO Free Baja Arizona, March Against Monsanto Tucson, Organic, Sustainable Baja Arizona, and GMO Free Arizona, and a great group of local vendors and businesses participating in the fair that sell non-GMO and organic products. Thanks also go to non-GMO activist Manny Lopez for his support and contributions to help advertise the event. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet like-minded individuals, learn about businesses you may not know about but ones you’ll want to support, and understand much better how we can powerfully go against GMOs both locally and nationally and take our food back!
