After Obama Signs the DARK Act

Word is getting around that the United States has once again shortchanged its people of the labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food that nine out of ten Americans want and the main recourse we have now is to take back our purchasing power by learning how to say no to GMOs, even without labeling. In case you missed the news:
On July 1st, Vermont became the first state in the nation to require on-package text labeling of GMOs in foods with the easy-to-understand words “partially produced with genetic engineering.”
Less than a month later, President Barack Obama signed a bill into law that overrides the Vermont GMO labeling law and allows companies to use other options such as scannable QR codes that aren’t instantly understood by consumers and can’t be used by people who don’t own smart phones. The law, which consumer groups call the Denying Americans the Right to Know or DARK Act, puts into place what the Center for Food Safety calls “a vague multi-year bureaucratic process specifically designed to provide less transparency to consumers.” (To read more about the many problems with the DARK Act, read my earlier post, The Solution to the Senate Betraying the American People on GMO Labeling.)
Though our government has consistently not given us the labeling we want, and the fighting and debating over labeling are likely to continue for quite some time, the good news is that we actually can learn to identify and avoid GMOs right now even without mandatory nationwide labeling. This is the message of Going Against GMOs and it is gradually spreading across the Internet. Plus, more stories and some reviews of the book are scheduled to be published soon.
